In the space of 7 years, Peter has grown his Granite Transformations franchise into the most successful business in the UK network with sales in excess of ÂŁ1m pa and net profits higher than any other franchisee.
2010 was without doubt Peter's most successful year yet. Not only was he nominated as Granite Transformations' Franchisee of the Year, but also won the Midlands category of the prestigious and hotly contested bfa/HSBC Franchisee of the Year Awards and picked up Bronze overall.
Like many others, Peter took up a Granite Transformations franchise as a major career change, having previously been in the world of IT recruitment.
"I'd been selling mainly business-to-business, but a colleague went into estate agency and I rather fancied the idea of dealing with the public on a daily basis too. Then a good friend, Gavin Whittaker, the original UK Granite Transformation franchisee, told me about the unique 'top that fits on top' concept and I realised there really wasn't another product on the market like it."
It's not all been plain sailing, but Peter's enthusiasm, determination and innovative approach has helped his business to grow steadily and given him a firm foundation to expand. He recently opened his second showroom in Brentwood, Essex.
Peter believes wholeheartedly in the product and is always looking for new ways to spread the word about Granite Transformations. One of his most successful inventions was the development of a sophisticated 'stand alone' merchandising unit.
"Our worktop material is a very 'touchy, feely' product because it has to be seen to be believed. I had the idea of building a display stand with a cutaway worktop to show how it 'fits on top', together with a leaflet dispenser and colour samples."
Now known as the Silent Salesman and adopted across the Granite Transformations UK network, the units are sited in garden centres and other likely venues at a distance from regular showrooms.
These unmanned displays attract the attention of gardeners and casual visitors, contributing almost 15% of national customer enquiries, making them the most effective marketing tool next to direct customer referrals.
Peter believes in sharing ideas and best practice with GT colleagues and even travelled to the States last year to exchange ideas with franchisees there.
"That's the beauty of being part of a franchise network: we're in the same business but we don't compete directly against each other since everyone has their own exclusive sales territory."
As with many successful franchisees, Peter's is a family owned business, with wife Helen looking after the accounts and back office functions and brother Henry in charge of the production site, managing a skilled team of technicians and fitters.
"I'm delighted to have won these awards, but it was really a team effort and I depend upon the skills and dedication of family members, our showroom people, our guys in the workshop and our qualified installers, all of whom contribute above and beyond the call of duty."
